TaiFabPlus
Hello, Fishcross Islanders! I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am for your support and enthusiasm for my strange little game. Today, I'd like to briefly share the story of Taiyaki Fabulous Museum of Fish Plus, the newly available upgrade of TaiFab.
After I released TaiFab, I almost immediately started working on the sequel, Taiyaki Fabulous Test Kitchen (TFTK). As all game devs reading this must know, developing a game is a trial by fire; any creative process is a learning process! With the helpful feedback of players and my own continuing research on GB Studio's capabilities, I started revising the engine of the first game for the sequel. In particular, an article from GB Studio Lab opened a whole world of possibilities for improving the nonogram engine, and the fine folks in GB Studio's Discord server are a font of information about the finer points of development.
While I was working on the sequel, my brother and I thought about printing a few physical cartridges of TaiFab to bring with us to a gaming convention. However, I really needed to reduce the size of the game for cost-effectiveness. I knew that the new engine for TFTK would be much more space efficient. Thus, in March, I dropped all my other projects and spent the month converting the first TaiFab to the new engine. My goal was to get the game from 2MB to at least 1MB, but I had a secret hope of reducing it even further to 512kB. I am happy to announce that I reached my toughest goal, and TaiFab is now 1/4 of its original size! π
In updating and shrinking the game, I have made the following changes from TaiFab to TaiFabPlus:
- TaiFabPlus is GBC-only (for a few reasons related to framerate and tile limits).
- The Select button now opens a save anywhere menu, and the Start button opens the inventory and puzzle albums menu.
- Holding the B button allows the player to run (without having to put on the Deboots in the Debug Room).
- Several scenes (such as the inn, the path from the start of the game, the museum interior, etc.) are now smaller. I like this change! It's nice to get around more quickly in a tighter environment.
- Players can now cross out numbers while solving nonograms, and there are darkened grid lines to aid counting.
- Two puzzles now have updated solutions to align them to my original intentions.
- A few dialogues have been revised.
- The Debug Room has been overhauled with updated tools, six bonus puzzles, and a sound test area. By the way, you can't access the Debug Room in the same way as the old version...
These are the player-facing changes; of course, there are other changes under the hood, especially in the nonogram engine. (Shout-out to Columbrine for developing a bespoke data-formatting program to complement the new engine!) It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with the result, and I still hope to make a truly deluxe version of TaiFab in the future! And of course, I'm resuming development on Taiyaki Fabulous Test Kitchen and bringing a whole new game to the world (hopefully by the end of this year π€)! For now, I hope TaiFabPlus brings enjoyment and quality of life to players, and I thank you all again for playing my game. π
Edit: Thanks to Marie, I was alerted to an issue with save data in TaiFabPlus. I have hopefully fixed the ROM so that saves can be loaded again! I have tested this on emulator and in an EverDrive on original hardware. If you folks notice any other issues, please let me know!

This game is super fun!! I was wondering through, I'm seeing an issue where the game seemingly can't read an existing save file. Have you seen this issue? I wonder if it has anything to do with the MBC settings, it looks like Plus is MBC3 while the original is MBC5.
Also, I was wondering if you might be interested in having a supplier for game cartridges? I make my own, just for fun as a hobby, and I'm looking for GB home-brew developers that might be interested in buying from me!
If you're talking about reading an existing save file from the previous version of TaiFab, my experience with GB Studio development has been that every new version renders old saves incompatible (even when all other settings are the same). However, this would be especially true for TaiFab and TaiFabPlus as they are completely different projects with different variable mapping. Sorry for any inconvenience. π
However, if you're talking about TaiFabPlus being unable to read its own save files, then I'm really worried! π¬ Could you let me know which of these issues it is?
It's really cool that you make cartridges! Do you have a site I could look at? π
Sadly Iβm talking about TaiFabPlus not being able to read its own save file π I can send you the save file I have, for testing. But Iβve observed this with mGBA, so you could probably repro it yourself.
I donβt have a site yet, but Iβd love to talk to you more about what I make! Could I reach out to you on Bluesky?
Oh noooooooo, that's disheartening! I'm taking a look at it right now. I may ask you for your save file later, and I appreciate you alerting me to this issue!
You can absolutely feel free to reach out to me on Bsky. π
Okay, changing it back to MBC5 made the save file work again on emulator! I'll have to try it on hardware as well. I had changed it to MBC3 for the cartridge type I had for the convention.
Edit: It works on my EverDrive on a GBC as well! Thank you again so much for letting me know! There is a new version available for download. If you try it out, please feel free to drop me a line about how it's working for you!
The new version saves and loads perfectly! π₯³
Yay, thank you!!
Wow! I've played the older version of this and loved it! So cool to see all the under-the-hood updates! Not so mention some of the quality-of-life upgrades you've listed.
I'll definitely be playing this again. My wife and I love this nanogram-style games. I'll have to show her this one.
Thank you!! I hope you and your wife enjoy TaiFabPlus! π
Amazing, congrats on the milestone and can't wait to see what's next for you. I recently got into new GBC/GBA games and was blown away by how fun TaiFab is. Planning to immediately replay once I finish everything!!
Thank you! I'm honored to hear that you are enjoying the game that much!
Oh wow, that is an impressive decrease in cart size! Are saved games from TaiFab compatible with TaiFabPlus? I want to update my dedicated cartridge but donβt want to lose my progress.
Thank you! It's funny how it can take a lot of work to make something smaller. :D
I'm sorry to say that the previous save file is not compatible with TaiFab Plus, unfortunately. :( Maybe if you decide to replay the game sometime in the future, you could start a new save on the Plus version.
